Water softener buying guide
It's easy to forget how important water is in our lives. Hard water can cause many problems around your home and your health. It is therefore often necessary to use a water softener. To choose the water softener suited to your needs it is essential to know some values:
1)The water hardness: it is measured in French degrees (°F). You can easily determine your home water hardness with a water test kit.
2)The peak water flow rate: this is the maximum temporary flow that the water softener provides.
3)The daily water flow rate: it is the capacity that manages to give the water softener during the day.
This method of selection allows selecting the water softener according to the daily water consumption compared to the number of homes to be served (see table 1) or according to the number of water withdrawal points/taps (see table 2), remembering that each tap or supply valve has a required average quantity of 12 liters per minute.
These two methods are unconnected but at the same time they complement each other:
In table one (1) the hardness of the water is taken into account and the choice leads directly to the volume of the softener's resins. In table two (2) the choice leads to the identification of the peak flow from which the required volume of resin is then searched. Usually we proceed to this double evaluation to have a well-calibrated water softener.
After analyzing the first table make sure that the water softener selected has a corresponding instantaneous flow rate. If the peak flow rate is not adequate, select the water softener model with a higher peak flow rate (see peak flow in the lower graph).
Table 1 shows the selection criteria of the water softener based on daily water consumption:
Table 2 shows the selection criteria of the water softener based on the peak flow rate:
Practical example:
If in table 1 you have selected a water softener for 2 homes with a hardness of 30 ° F, the result is the 10 liter resin softener; but if you your system has 4 water taps/supply valves, following the indication of table 2. you will need a water softener that can supply a flow peak of 18 liters. So you have choose an 18 or 20 liter water softener instead of the 10 liters we had selected in table 1.
