Water system with surface electric pump and variable frequency drives

Variable-frequency drives (VFD) are also known as AC drivesadjustable-frequency drives (AFD)variable-speed drives (VSD) or inverter drives.

Pump managed by an inverter drives - main features

1) Operation in frequency modulation.
2) Maintenance of constant pressure.
3) No kickback due to pressure changes.
4) Energy saving *.

* to maximize energy savings, the installation of an expansion vessel is recommended.

The right size VSD will save you money and also make sure that the system is energy efficient. With an inverter drives, the pump is operated when the tap is opened and calibrated based on the actual water requirement (by modulating the power according to actual needs. Using a adjustable frequency drives will save you from 30% to 50% of electricity per year).

Suction from collection tank (upper suction head)

Below there is a practical example of an home water system that pumps from a tank with a positive head. A ball valve and a non-return valve are always request in the suction pipe; while in the delivery pipe there is needed the inverter device which controls the start and stop of the electric pump (by modulating the engine revolutions according to the required water), saving of electricity. In the case of an automatic system with tank, it becomes mandatory to use an automatic tank filling system and a by-pass system, in order to feed into the same pipe the water supplied by the pump and the water supplied by the network.

From which of the two plants will water enter the house?
The water that will enter the house will be the one with the greatest pressure:
if the greater pressure is given by the boosting pressure system,it will be the water from the electric pump to enter the house; if, instead, the greater pressure is given by the network, it will be the water from the network to come out of your taps.

Suction from collecting tank (positive head)

In this example you will find a VFD, an electric pump, a tank an expasion tank, and other accessoires. The presence of the expansion vessel is very useful to avoid the continuous starts of the electric pump.

Suction from well or tank (negative head)

All the electric pumps can pump the water either falling from a tank (positive head), or from a well or tank through a suction tube (negative head).
The system in the figure at the side, shows the pump that sucks from a negative head (well or tank).

The plant is made up of an inverter drives that manages the starts of the pump; a bottom valve (foot valve) placed in the suction pipe which keeps the pipe always full of water; an airtight suction tube of the desired length (for a maximum of 7 meters in vertical); a 3-piece fitting that allows easy removal of the suction pipe. The system has a non-return valve (
applied in the mains water pipe) to be used in the case of direct water; a tee (T) fitting to insert the pump delivery and the supply of the network.

It may happen that after long periods of inactivity of the pump unit, it occurs that the suction pipe is emptied.

The use of a self-priming pump leads to fewer problems as it ensures the drafting of water even in the presence of air bubbles or with an empty suction pipe.

We have automatic self-priming pumps ready for use.

The use of the inverter optimizes the energy consumption, increases the life of the electric pump,  and guarantees a constant pressure regardless of the required flow.

A bypass system is necessary to feed the water supplied by the pump and the mains water into the same pipe.
