Do I really need a pressure tank?
The pressure tank is important because it keeps water pressure at a constant level. It also keeps air and water separated. Without these features the pump would turn on and off quickly and the motor would quickly burn out.
An air charge in the tank delivers water pressure out of the tank and into the hose to avoid water pump rapid on-off cycling or "short cycling" that damages the system.
With the use of a pressure tank, the pump starting times are reduced and the water hammers are absorbed by the tank.
